Ethereum is an open-source, public blockchain platform that enables the development of decentralized applications (dApps) through smart contract functionality. Operating with its native cryptocurrency, Ether (ETH), Ethereum allows secure peer-to-peer transactions and decentralized computation via the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).
The concept of Ethereum was introduced in 2013 by developer Vitalik Buterin and funded in 2014 through an initial coin offering (ICO). Designed as a “next-generation cryptocurrency and decentralized application platform,” Ethereum quickly gained traction and, by 2018, had become the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, earning its title as the leading second-generation blockchain.
On September 15, 2022, Ethereum underwent a major upgrade known as “The Merge,” transitioning from the energy-intensive Proof of Work (PoW) consensus model to a more sustainable Proof of Stake (PoS) system. This shift reduced the network’s energy consumption by over 99% and introduced validator-based security, replacing traditional mining. One of Ethereum’s core innovations is the use of smart contracts — self-executing code that operates on the blockchain and automates predefined actions. To execute these contracts, users pay gas fees to validators. Developers can also issue custom tokens using standards like ERC-20 and ERC-721, enabling tokenized ecosystems and NFT-based applications to thrive on the Ethereum network.
To address scalability and high transaction costs, Ethereum supports a range of Layer 2 scaling solutions. Technologies such as Arbitrum, Optimism, and zkSync leverage rollups, which process transactions off-chain and only post final data to the Ethereum mainnet. In 2024, the implementation of EIP-4844 (also known as proto-danksharding) significantly reduced data availability costs for rollups, improving network efficiency. The upcoming Pectra upgrade, expected in 2025, aims to increase staking limits per validator and introduce advanced features such as account abstraction. Additionally, Ethereum integrates state channels — a Layer 2 solution similar to Bitcoin’s Lightning Network — allowing users to conduct fast, low-cost transactions off-chain while minimizing the load on the main network.
Through continuous innovation, a strong developer community, and an expanding DeFi and Web3 ecosystem, Ethereum remains one of the foundational platforms bridging decentralized technologies and traditional finance in the Web3 era.
