Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is a cryptocurrency developed by Viabtc based on the Bitcoin ABC protocol. On July 21, 2017, the Bitcoin BIP91 upgrade was supported by the entire network’s computing power, which included the implementation of Segregated Witness (SegWit) and a plan to increase the base blockchain’s block size to 2 MB within six months. However, the Viabtc mining pool, operating under the Bitcoin Mainland mining giant, diverged from this consensus and executed a hard fork from the original Bitcoin chain, creating what is now known as Bitcoin Cash. Following the roadmap laid out by Zhongben Cong, Bitcoin Cash aims to increase online capacity and achieve global adoption. As an initial step, the block size limit was made adjustable and set to a default of 8 MB, with ongoing research to further increase block capacity in the future. Bitcoin Cash also introduced a new transaction signature type (Sighash) to protect against replay attacks, improve hardware wallet security, and resolve secondary hashing issues. Its new difficulty adjustment algorithm (DAA) allows miners to switch freely between the old Bitcoin chain and the new Bitcoin Cash chain while providing protection against excessive fluctuations in computing power. Development of Bitcoin Cash is decentralized and managed by multiple independent teams, ensuring that software implementations remain secure and resilient over time. The project is designed to withstand political and social attacks on protocol development, with no single team or project able to exert control over it. The Bitcoin ML mailing list serves as an effective platform for collaboration among various development teams, facilitating consensus-driven protocol changes. Bitcoin Cash offers significant improvements in blockchain scalability and transaction speed, positioning itself as a vital digital asset that pursues Bitcoin’s original vision by enabling faster and more cost-effective payment systems.
