According to Blockstream's third-quarter business update, the Bitcoin infrastructure company proposed new digital signature technology to help Bitcoin prepare for future quantum computing attacks. The team evaluated three lattice-based signature schemes—Dilithium, Falcon, and Hawk—and concluded that Falcon-1024 offers the best balance between data size, verification speed, and security maturity, stating "if we had to choose a lattice-based signature scheme for Bitcoin today, we would choose Falcon-1024." However, researchers noted that finalizing the Falcon standard, obtaining verified implementations, and addressing hardware wallet memory constraints remain key challenges. The team also suggested hash-based signatures as a more conservative near-term option, with the potential to combine both approaches once Falcon standardization matures.
