DOE Exploring Nuclear Reactor Option for Pax Silica's 3,000 MW Power Demand

According to the Department of Energy, on Wednesday, November 4, the Philippines is exploring a nuclear reactor as a potential power source for the Pax Silica industrial hub in Tarlac, which requires an estimated 3,000 megawatts of electricity. DOE Director IV Patrick Aquino told reporters that the U.S. side has commissioned studies on powering the hub, though he declined to confirm specific costs.

Aquino acknowledged significant regulatory challenges, noting that licensing and safety requirements for small modular reactors and micro-modular reactors remain incomplete. The Philippine Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (PhilATOM) has yet to become fully operational, with leadership appointments and implementing rules still pending. Experts at a Pax Silica forum raised concerns about the feasibility, including high infrastructure costs if demand falls short and the Philippines' limited regulatory capacity for nuclear energy.
