Google's Willow Quantum Chip Cuts Magic States Error Rate by 40x, Raising Quantum Risk Concerns for Early Bitcoin Wallets

According to ChainCatcher, Google's Willow quantum chip reduced the error rate for preparing Magic States (a key resource for quantum computing) by approximately 40 times using its "Cultivation" method, with findings published in Science this week. The experiment achieved around 99.99% state fidelity, though only approximately 8% of attempts passed selection. Google previously estimated that future quantum computers could break Bitcoin and Ethereum wallet cryptography with fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, bringing early Bitcoin wallets with publicly disclosed keys into potential quantum attack scope. The company noted that further expansion of experimental scale and solutions for real-time operation and error correction remain necessary before actual quantum attack capability is achieved.
