Sony Operating Profit Jumps 45% While Nintendo Falls 16% on November 5 Earnings

According to Sony's November 5 financial results, the company's operating profit surged 45% to ¥622.3 billion ($3.95 billion) in the July-September quarter, while Nintendo's operating profit declined 16% to ¥73.9 billion for the same period. Sony's gaming division saw operating profit increase approximately 83%, boosted by software and digital services, though PlayStation 5 hardware sales fell to 2.6 million units from 4 million year-on-year. Nintendo sold 2.67 million Switch 2 consoles during the quarter but faces pressure from rising memory chip costs driven by AI data center demand, which is constraining capacity for conventional memory used in gaming hardware.
