According to Vitalik Buterin's statement on November 8, Ethereum co-founder argues ETH should be positioned as a value store rather than a fee-burn token. While Vitalik supports retaining EIP-1559 and its burn mechanism, he contends that even if fee burns fall short of break-even by 90%, this is not concerning because ETH's true value derives elsewhere—specifically from Ethereum's decentralization, censorship and capture resistance, open source nature, privacy, and security, which provide practical stability advantages.
Vitalik outlined three reasons. First, fee burn support for valuation has never been as strong as perceived; historical high burns between 2021–2023 stemmed mainly from internal crypto activities that would collapse if ETH crashed 90%, offering no real valuation floor. Second, optimizing for burn to sustain a $270 billion market value would require ~700,000 ETH annually in protocol R&D spending and heavy governance intervention, conflicting with decentralization and capture resistance while raising gas costs. Third, prioritizing value storage aligns with decentralization and CROPS (censorship/capture resistance, openness, privacy, security), enabling safer holdings and transfers while reducing infrastructure dependencies.
