According to developers, on November 7, Ethereum's proposed EIP-8037 gas repricing within the Glamsterdam upgrade could break 200,000 smart contracts deployed on the network. The proposal raises gas costs for creating new state, such as storage entries and deployed contracts. Existing smart contracts that set fixed gas amounts or check remaining gas during transactions could run out of gas and fail once the new prices apply, potentially leaving user funds stuck. Curve Finance's founder warned that Glamsterdam could trigger an emergency hard fork, while developer banteg called the plan "completely ridiculous." Ryan Berckmans, an influential Ethereum community member, initially called for "asap" activation but reversed course within hours, stating the problem is "essentially worse than generally understood" and requires "immediate remediation."
