Google Drops $17B on Wyoming Data Center as Local Opposition Grows

According to Google's announcement on Thursday, the company is investing $17 billion in its first Wyoming data center near Cheyenne. Project Tembo spans 716 acres with four data halls planned, targeting 2.7 GW capacity with full buildout by 2031.

The investment comes two days after voters overwhelmingly rejected data center measures in 40 of 41 local ballot initiatives this week. Google says it will cover 100% of the facility's power costs, as hyperscalers face mounting resistance to AI infrastructure projects over concerns about water, power, and environmental impact.
